Ground Control Published
by Sold Out Software When the history of RTS gaming is written Ground Control will deserve a special mention. For years RTS gamers have had to put up with resource management (building a base and buildings with which to create your military units etc.) which was off putting for a fair amount of gamers. Ground Control was one of the first RTS games to do away with the resource management and concentrate solely on the battles. The impact this had was amazing and very liberating for many gamers. Massive Entertainment not only removed resource management though, they actually created an engrossing game which at the time (2000) looked highly impressive. Ground Countrol can be considered to be one of the first 3D RTS games that was both visually impressive and actually used the 3D enviroment to good effect. The game features formations and other valuable tactical options that really make a difference in a battle, when used properly. In fact the only option it is missing is the ability to make decisions whilst the game is paused. There are two campaigns to enjoy as well as a half decent multiplayer mode. The only real things you can say against the game is that the enemy AI is perhaps not the smartest we have seen and it is a shame that there is not a mid-mission save feature. The tutorial is subtitled and essential messages during the game are subtitled but the cutscenes aren't subtitled and unit confirmation comments aren't subtitled either. The mission briefings are given in text so you'll have no problems understanding your objectives. The bottom line is that there are no real obstacles to enjoying the game. If you don't own Ground Control this is an excellent chance to get a great game at an exceptional price. Recommendation:
One of the best RTS games of recent years. Overall Game Rating: 4.0/5 |
