After the excellent Dead or Alive 3 it was hugely disappointing to experience Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. It wasn’t really much of a game at all. In fact it was simply a product that allowed those who wanted to gawp at the Dead or Alive girls a way of doing so. Yes the game did allow you to play volleyball but the volleyball aspect of the game was simply an afterthought. The game was just a window to see the Dead or Alive girls in all kinds of kinky swimsuits with a few mini-games thrown in to pad out the shallow experience. Several years later and the disappointment can be felt again because after the excellent Dead or Alive 4, we now have Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and once again it’s a virtual peep show; a 21st century version of the Playboy magazine you could say.
The game is played out on New Zack Island and once again the game is filled with the Dead or Alive girls. You’ll choose a girl to play as and like in the first game the idea is to win the affections of another girl by buying her gifts etc. Yes this does seem kinky and yes the game is suggestive, although thankfully it stops there. The suggestiveness was no doubt put there to boost the sales. The opening movie alone shows that the game should have earned a PEGI rating of at least 16+ (the game has a mature rating in the US and correctly so) instead of the idiotic 12+ it’s been given here but then again the PEGI ratings have been known to be wildly inaccurate before.
To pad out this kind of soft porn experience there are several mini-games you can take part in. You can play a variety of games at the Casino such as Roulette, Blackjack and Poker. You can have marine races and take part in some pool games such as Water Slide, Pool Hopping, Tug-of-War and even a game called Butt Battle where your girl and her opponent stand on a float and you have to push your opponent off the float using nothing but your backside. Of course you can always play volleyball. You’ll earn money from playing these games and you’re going to need plenty of it in order to be able to afford gifts for the girl you’re trying to win over. The real problem here is that, putting the sexually suggestive nature of the game aside for a moment, it’s a pretty boring experience. The volleyball is still very poor and most of the other events aren’t worth bothering with. The marine races are quite good and it’s no surprise that you can race online (as well as play volleyball online) because it’s arguably the best activity in the game.
Graphically the game hasn’t changed at all since Dead or Alive 4. Whilst the characters do look good, I am getting a little tired of the Barbie doll look of the characters. Tecmo ought to try and take advantage of the Xbox 360 given that they have had more time with the console. Previous Dead or Alive games have been known for their realistic modelling of boob bounce but Xtreme 2 throws all sense of proportion out of the window and here we have breasts that move like they have a life of their own and it just looks stupid in places. The game has lots of small loading times that serve to break up the experience, which isn’t much to begin with.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 is fairly deaf gamer friendly with most of the speech being subtitled (although some things are not subtitled such as the opening movie) and all of the important information being shown in text. However, you have to ask yourself if it’s worth £49.99 and the answer is a resounding no! The game is simply a mixture of tit and tat that won’t satisfy anyone who isn’t looking to simply ogle the almost nude character models (believe me some of the swimsuits leave little to the imagination) of the Dead or Alive girls. The whole thing wouldn’t be so bad if there was a solid game here but there isn’t.
Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 is simply a product to allow gamers to ogle the Dead or Alive girls and nothing more. If you want to see these virtual beauties in a real game pick up Dead or Alive 4.
