Not many games that are nearly two years old still attract the attention that Project IGI does. You are cast in the role of David Llewelyn Jones, an ex SAS soldier who is about to embark on an undercover search for a stolen US nuclear weapon as it is feared that it is going to be used to cause another Chernobyl catastrophe. As Jones you will be required to infiltrate military strongholds, in a variety of locations, in your quest to locate the nuclear weapon.
Project IGI has to be one of the most suspense filled titles in the FPS genre. Some of the reason for this suspense is of course the nature of the game with you infiltrating military strongholds whilst attempting to remain undetected. Another key ingredient to the suspense is the inability to save your game mid-mission. This may sound horribly difficult and yes at first you will feel like the game's developers have been extremely harsh in not giving you the ability to save mid-mission. However the enjoyment that is to be had from doing everything right is immense and far more gratifying than in a game where you quicksave every five seconds.
Graphically the game still looks good. Some of the levels are absolutely huge and yet the game doesn't slow down at all. Plenty of the more recent game engines are not this good at handling such huge levels. From a control point of view it has to be said that the default keyboard layout is appalling and completely alien to most FPS gamers. Luckily this doesn't count against the game, as it allows you to fully customise the controls to ones of your liking.
You may have noticed from the screenshots that the cutscenes are fully subtitled. Mission objectives can be recalled at any time by bringing up the map screen and accessing them from there. You are also notified when the alarm has been raised which is most welcome in a game such as this. The only missing feature, as far as deaf gamers are concerned is captions for enemy gunfire but this doesn't do any real harm to the experience.
Project IGI has often been called the PC's own Goldeneye (N64) and this is a deserved title. Gripping action from start to finish makes this game a must for all you FPS fans that missed out on it the first time.
Recommendation:
Still a classic after all this time and in my opinion a
better game than it's sequel.
Suitability for deaf gamers: No real problems
for deaf gamers.
Overall
Game Rating: 4.5/5
