Legacy of Kain: Defiance PC CD-ROM

Published by Mastertronic
Developed by Crystal Dynamics
Release Date: Out Now
Price: £9.99

Legacy of Kain: Defiance allows you to finally play as both Kain and Raziel. If you've enjoyed the previous games in the Legacy of Kain series you'll definitely want to play Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Everything that made the previous games enjoyable is here and you have the added bonus of controlling both Kain and Raziel.

The game was also developed for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The result of this is a control scheme that really needs a gamepad. Whilst you can play using the keyboard, it's not an ideal solution to be perfectly honest. Graphically the game looks very good and the frame rate remains smooth even during the most hectic action. There is one major fly in the ointment though and that's the crazy camera angles. The game camera is mostly out of your control. You can press the 'E' key to look around but otherwise you're stuck with the awkward camera angles. Considering you have to perform jumps and other manoeuvres this makes things rather irritating at times. A lack of a mini-map/radar is also a mistake that shouldn't have been made.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance does have subtitles, although you'll have to enable them. All cutscene dialogue is subtitled but speech outside of the cutscenes is not subtitled. All tutorial messages are shown in text which means you'll be able to fully learn how to play the game. On the whole the game shouldn't give deaf gamers any real problems although it's worth noting that there are no sound captions and as such you won't have the advantage of being alerted to nearby, out of sight enemies. Still if you're a fan of the series, and you don't yet own the game, this is a great opportunity to pick the game up at a bargain price.

Overall Game Rating: 3.5/5

A good addition to the Legacy of Kain series but there are some silly mistakes here such as the poor camera angles and no mini-map to allow you to get your bearings.
