Basically the idea of Industry Giant II is to collect raw materials and manufacture them into a finished product which you'll then transport to your shops and sell for the most profit possible. As you satisfy the needs of a town, the population will expand which in turn increases the demand for goods. The whole thing is a balancing act and a very addictive one at that. You'll play scenarios in different time frames which determine what products and transportation types are available. The original release of Industry Giant II started you off in the year 1900 and ran to 1980. The expansion added technology and transportation types from 1980 to the futuristic 2020. The Gold Edition combines both of these to give you outstanding value.
Thankfully the game is totally deaf gamer friendly. Everything, including the tutorials and lexicon is given solely in text. In fact there is no speech within the game. The text is clearly legible and is very easy on the eyes. You can even change the colour scheme of the interface if you wish. The only thing you have to watch is that the game does not automatically pause when a dialogue box appears so time can tick away, whilst you're reading, if you don't make the effort to pause the game yourself.
Graphically the game looks OK. Rather than having a fully rotating 3D terrain map the designers have decided to stick with the classic isometric viewpoint. This is a shame but in light of the fact that it keeps the system requirements reasonable and affords a clear, uncomplicated view of the proceedings it is difficult to criticise. The game places icons over buildings to show what is being produced, and the level of production, and again this makes it easy to keep track of what is going on. There are multiple levels of zoom and the graphics don't look too bad when zoomed in quite close. I would have liked to have seen a zoom feature on the mini map though as things can look a little small.
Games that specifically cater to resource management are thin on the ground. With Impressions Games' City Building Series gone forever and titles in the genre appearing less frequently than ever it's a struggle to pick out titles that are worth the cash. If you missed out on Industry Giant II at the first time of asking, you can't go wrong picking it up now at a bargain price.
