Every version of the Colin McRae Rally series has been tremendously popular and the third in the series was no exception. Whilst the game isn't as good as Colin McRae Rally 04 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 (which is the way it should be), it's a great all round game that's well worth it's now low asking price. That said however it's important to realise that Colin McRae Rally 3 had some limitations which might prove off-putting.

If you've played Colin McRae Rally 2.0 you'll have played and enjoyed the arcade mode which put you in a wheel-to-wheel race with other cars. This feature was excellent but sadly it was not included in Colin McRae Rally 3 or any other version since. Another niggle with the game was that you could only drive as Colin McRae in the career mode. Whilst fans of Colin probably don't mind this, the rest of us do. Thankfully this was rectified in later versions but as for Colin McRae Rally 3 you don't have a choice.

Of course you can probably guess that the co-drivers comments are not subtitled. The visual pace notes are colour coded to highlight the severity of the turns which is very useful. A white background indicates a fairly safe turn whilst a red background indicates a right pig of a turn. The visual pace notes are good but they don't convey details such as bumps and other details in addition to the nature of the turns. All other information is shown visually though.

All things considered Colin McRae Rally 3 is a good game but if you can pick up Colin McRae Rally 04 for a reasonable price I'd take that over this. Don't get me wrong it's a great game but the fact that you have no choice who to drive as in the career mode will be off-putting to some people.

Overall Game Rating: 4.0/5

A rally title worth of your money, but only if you can't pick up the later titles in the series.
