Wolfenstein 3D is seen by many as the game that shaped the FPS genre into what it is today. After only a few moments play you'll appreciate just how strongly the game has influenced the countless FPS games that have since followed the game. Wolfenstein 3D pits you against the old foe, Hitler and his Third Reich cronies. The game is split into six episodes ranging from Escape from Wolfenstein to Confrontation, which is the final episode. As you might expect the game play is fairly simple and the AI is pretty crude but nevertheless it's still enjoyable and it's guaranteed to run as smooth as silk on any functional PC.
Graphically the game looks horrible by today's standards but if you've ever played any of the old DOS based games the chunky pixelated visuals that are on display here will certainly bring back some fond memories. The control scheme is basic but functional. You use the cursor keys to move and can look around with the mouse (you can't look up or down though). The space bar is used to open doors or alternatively you can use the right mouse button to perform the same actions.
Wolfenstein 3D comes from a time when deaf gamers had little to be concerned about. The technology wasn't good enough to support speech and all of the sound within the game is very basic. That said though sometimes an enemy will surprise you from behind and will make a kind of crudely digitised grunt. This grunt will give hearing gamers a split second warning that an enemy is behind them so they will have time to move out of the way. Deaf gamers won't have this luxury though and will more than likely be hit by an enemy from behind. Other than this though there isn't any problems.
Recommendation:
Recommended. An ancient FPS classic that still manages to
be enjoyable.
Suitability for deaf gamers: OK. You have
audible warning of enemies attacking from behind though.
